Description

Here is a portrait I did for my lovely friend :iconxcrimsonwolf:, or the Sarah of which you all wonder who she is.;) I was going to hold this portrait for ransom, you know, to get my stuff, but... I am too much of a softy when it comes to Sarah, cuz, you know, her being like, awesome, like she is.
Anyway, this is her in a gender bender of Red XIII or Nanaki from Final Fantasy.
Her hair is really blue on the ends too! But she is cuter than this for reals yo. I am just doing meh art thang...yo.^^
Anyhoo, hope you like it my dear friend! Yo.

Long awaited critique from me! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/>
Firstly I would like to say how remarkably close this is to the reference picture, and that I am only being harsh cause I know you can do better than this!

Firstly the eye... this bothers me a little, it looks extremely cartoony, there is no variation from the iris into the colour as there should be in a realistic eye, like this, see the little strands within the eye almost likke eye colour veins? : [link] There are also dark areas around the coloured part of the eye too, I can see you have attempted this here but you might need a little more definition there just to make that eye POP!
The eye socket on our right is great, but I feel you need a little more shadow just behind the nose to get that perspective down.. but I cannot be sure on this because I am not 100% sure where the light source is. Which brings me onto my next point, you need to get some of those awesome shadows and highlights in here yo! you have all your midtones I can see, but this image looke a little flat to me. some shines on the cheeks depending on your light source, and other places too like the hair needs more highlighting/shadowing to really convince me where that light is coming from.
Again, I am going to chastise you on the amount of black used here, see the shadow in the crook of her neck? thats perfect Jon, keep using those browns and reds and purples and any other colour that might take your fancy, colour is your friend! And you need to play with your friends no? Experiment ! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/> look at colour wheels to help you, and maybe research colour theoru a little more, I recently did and it has helped me a lot!
I already said about the writing looking a little flat, and it looks odd as it does not follow the general angle or curvature of the arm.. sort of looke like her arm is .. flat, you could improve this by adding some highlights but remember next time think of your angles!
Those beads are great so far, but like i said there are no highlights! you have your shadow area and your midtone, but you need to follow that through with highlights...

With all that said please know I still love this piece, and I am very critical here but like I said Jon, I believe in you!
Hope I helped you a little! Enjoy! <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b…" width="15" height="15" alt=":D" title=":D (Big Grin)"/> <img src="e.deviantart.net/emoticons/h/h…" width="15" height="13" alt="" title="Heart"/>
